Techsoup NPO Directory Launch
Tuesday 6pm, SLT, there will be a launch of a Non Profit Orgs in SL directory during the Net Tuesday event on info island. I worked on the scripting/backend of the directory. Frank Foley did the design, and it works pretty well if I do say so myself. I am happy with the results. See you there. I like the techsoup.org mission, so I was happy to help.
Good piece on SL
This is a pretty decent piece on SL. Gets the idea across fairly well.
Though I disagree with Hamlet’s description of of trying to get across SL to someone as “If someone’s comfortable with technology and gaming, I’ll just say [Second Life is] ‘World of Warcraft, but all user-created”.
I think the best analogy for SL is the Web itself - with Sims == web server. Builds == web pages. Like the web, you have shared hosting (sims with multiple resis - think first land sims), all the way to dedicated servers (ie: owning an island). You have nice, well designed pages == nice builds. Like the web, the majority is user created content. Like the web, it’s full of diversity in terms of what you can be doing at any given moment. WoW really is just the geek golf.
Key Name Reconciliation
As some of you know, neighbours has had an issue where (waiting) was displayed in place of peoples names. Basically, what was happening is that I use the new llHTTPRequest function, and just pull info from the headers, as oppossed to sending it in my request itself. Turns out, when the owner name is not readily available, SL just sends (waiting) rather than hold the request back (thanks Zarf).
So I am posting the two pieces of this reconciler [sanitized], which someone may find useful.

Not Ok, Cupid
OK Cupid == lame suckage. I have had a profile for myself as Max Case on Ok-Cupid for a while. I used it as a social networking site, did the tests, met a few people etc. The main motivation at the time was, I thought it would be cool, and to be honest, a bit ahead of the curve to have a profile for my avatar [something we will be seeing more of in the future]. Neighbours update.
Sim Neighbours finally got it's long awaited update.
